Cutup Friday: Bruce Arians' Middle Read (2019 Buccaneers)
Middle Read is a day 1 install for Bruce Arians.
Middle Read isolates the two outside receivers, usually on Go routes. With Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, this concept fit the Bucs personnel well. Each guy can win 1 on 1 on the outside.
The tight end or slot receiver runs the Middle Read. The route looks like a Post against two high, and more like a Crossing route against 1 high. If the outside guys get double teamed, this route should have leverage and space.
The Bucs averaged nearly 15 yards per attempt with this concept in 2019, with Jameis Winston at quarterback.
Each Friday, I plan on updating the list of cutups posted in one location. Here are the cutups we have to date:
2022 Miami Dolphins Reverses/End Arounds
2021 Green Bay Packers Four Strong Smash Split
2022 Miami Dolphins Bang-Pivot Weak
The videos below show 14 minutes (!) of the Bucs running this concept.
