Cutup Friday: 2022 49ers OZ Zorro Cat Adjustment
The Zorro and Zorro Cat tags to outside zone have been discussed extensively in many of my recent books, as well as the community on Twitter/X.
In short, it is termed for the combination of the TE/FB on the EMOL up to the support player. The Cat tag asks the PSWR to push crack the support defender, and asks the TE/FB combo to work tot he cornerback. The next image shows Zorro Cat to an Odd front. This run is a staple Shanahan call against Odd front defenses.
The adjustment I found interesting from 2022 is the push crack adjustment to block the first box off-ball defender. This helps with blocking angles for the offensive line’s combinations. It also becomes a “call-it, run it” play, and doesn’t need to be adjusted to rotation away.
This was the play call that McCaffrey had his long touchdown run against the Packers last week in the divisional round.
The next diagrams show some versions from 2022. PSWR blocking the Nickel and Mike in these examples.
The next video shows 3-minutes of the Zorro Cat adjustment:
