Cutup Friday: 2024 Minnesota Vikings "Wave" Concept

The 2024 Minnesota Vikings Complete Offensive Manual is now available! The Vikings boast an explosive passing attack. Both drop back and play action concept designs were a lot of fun to study and break down.

Here is one they excelled at. Hi Cross with two vertical clear outs is commonly called “Wave” in some coaching circles. They averaged over 11 yards per attempt when calling it.

The book goes into great detail on this concept and all of the different ways the Vikings got to it. They called it out of all of their personnel groupings, drop back and play action, and even out of empty. They even play action’d some of their unique run concepts with it, like Duo Wrap.

The diagram below shows a base version, off 3x1 Duo.

The book also explains how this concept allows the offense to still get to a Hi Cross as the primary route even with the defense playing trouble coverages.

The Vikings also use elite check down distribution with the concept, replacing any underneath defenders getting depth under the Hi Cross.

The Vikings weren’t afraid to throw the alert route (outside #1 post). I have to include an image of this, since this web site is called Alert The Post after all.

This book was a lot of fun to write. If you want to keep up with the latest pass game trends in the NFL, I highly recommend studying Coach of the Year Kevin O’Connell’s attack.
