Cutup Friday: 2023 Packers 3x1 Duo
Duo is an all-purpose run for the Packers. Early down situations as well as short yardage/red zone. It is a downhill gap scheme run with no pullers. The running back will aim for the strong A-gap, but has the ability to bounce the run. His read is the Mike. If the Mike triggers and fills fast, and the offensive line doesn’t get much vertical movement, this will trigger the bounce read.
Similar to the Packers’ zone runs, they have the ability to call Duo from under center or shotgun.
11 personnel Duo is drawn up against a 4-down Over front as the primary look. The offensive line will double team the 3-technique and the 1-technique. The next image shows how standard 11 personnel Duo is installed.
3x1 is the most common version. The off-ball receiver is used as the adjuster for any secondary rotation that presents itself. This receiver will short motion or even motion across the formation to find the defender he is assigned to block. The idea here is to get like-bodies on like-bodies. Receivers on safeties, offensive line/TE on defensive line and linebackers.
From the original alignment, the Z receiver does not have a good angle to block the down safety. With a wide-9, the insert will take place just inside the tight end. This cutup focuses on this version.
The video below shows nearly 15 minutes of 3x1 Duo clips.
