Cutup Friday: 2023 Lions/Dolphins Arches
Arches/H Post is an old staple of the Greatest Show on Turf offense of the 1999-2005 St Louis Rams. Coaches have adapted it and fit it into their offense ever since.
The 2023 Lions and Dolphins were no different. The major tweak they incorporated was to tag a Return route behind the primary “H Post”. This creates a more streamlined progression read. This tweak is probably my favorite way to run the concept.
The diagram below shows a good example from Miami. This particular one uses the Arches action as a backside of sorts. The cutup will show the defense getting 3 over 2 on the Smash side, so Tua resets to the three in-breaking routes on the Arches side. Sprinkle in some fast motion, and this play has everything you need.
I write about these concepts extensively in Game Planning with the 2023 Miami Dolphins and Game Planning with the 2023 Detroit Lions. Both available on Amazon.
The video below shows 8 minutes of 2023 Arches clips.
