Cutup Friday: 2022 Lions GT Counter
Ben Johnson and the Lions were a big Counter team in 2022. GT Counter was a version that popped up on occasion, not necessarily game-planned for a specific opponent.
The Lions ran it out of 11 and 12 personnel.
GT Counter is a version of Counter where the offense will pull both the backside guard and the backside tackle.
The Lions will call GT Counter both strong and weak. When run weak, the tight end is often used to “sift” the BSDE with the BST to the strong linebacker.
GT Counter is a scheme popular in college football. Lincoln Riley featured this concept while he was the head coach at Oklahoma, and its usage spread like wild fire from there.
Why it Worked: In week 7 the Lions called the wing counter shown in the 7th diagram. The PSDE gets upfield, creating a larger hole for the wing to get through.
Why it Didn’t Work: In week 5, the Lions call the RPO version with the bubble, shown in the 5th diagram. The point man gets double teamed, and its still able to make the tackle at the line of scrimmage.
