Cutup Friday: 2021 Browns TE Filter Screens
This breakdown is taken from The 2021 Cleveland Browns Complete Offensive Manual.
The Browns are a fantastic screen team. Getting the tight ends involved with Filter screens is a very efficient part of their offense.
A critical element is the technique of the tight end setting on the EMOL. If he releases too early, the EMOL may sniff out the screen and wont attack the quarterback.
Against Over fronts. The guards will try and reach the nose and tackle, with the help of the PST and Center. The PST and Center are typically the ones running the screen against this front. The next image shows how this looks
The Browns will run tight end screens with their gap protection as well. Pulling a guard has more influence on second level defenders. The next image shows how the Browns like to block the screen with the influence pull the other way.
The center, BSG, and BST will work to the screen if they can. The BST will work back to the defensive end chasing the tight end down from behind if he sniff it out.
Why it Worked: In general, these screens are well-designed and executed properly by the Browns. Great teach tape for the concept that can be applied to most offenses at any level.
Why it Didn’t Work: Towards the end of the season, teams realized how dangerous these plays were and scouted them better. Many EMOL’s stayed home to help stop the screens.
