Cutup Friday: 2020 Green Bay Packers Inside Zone Slice
Split Zone, or Inside Zone Slice, is a common run play at all levels of football. With most programs running inside zone to varying degrees, split zone is an easy compliment off it.
Simply put, the offensive line will blocks inside zone towards the tight end. The tight end will “slice” back to block the defensive end.
The defense has a few ways they can react. Out of single high, the linebackers can fall back a gap, or the safety over the tight end can follow him across the formation.
Out of two high, a defense can spin a safety down to the side the tight end is heading to. They can also ask the defensive end to spill the tight end, and bounce the play out to a secondary player fitting late.
The Packers will run it with a backside tight end, front side tight end, and RPO it too. In my books and other posts, I go into more detail the specific benefits of these adjustments on inside zone slice.
