Concept Cutup: 2023 Dolphins Crack Toss
The Dolphins destroyed teams with Crack Toss in 2023.
This cutup is one of the premier ones to study this off season. Crack Toss is one of my favorite concepts, and I like to discuss it as often as possible.
Here are two sections from Game Planning with the 2023 Miami Dolphins. The cutup at the end shows nearly 24 minutes of Crack Toss clips from the Dolphins 2023 season.
The Dolphins converted a 3rd and 3 with a well designed version of Crack Toss at 1Q 2:31 in week 1.
Using fast motion, the offense can gain a numbers advantage. Particularly when the defense starts in single high. Crack Toss is also a particularly good play call in passing situations, as the defensive ends are more eager to get upfield to get to the quarterback. This makes the crack block for the tight end/receiver easier.
In this example, the Dolphins have a +1 on the edge. This allows the pulling tackle to be the “trash man” and clean up any linebacker inside that the offensive line cant get up to.
In week 12 at 1Q 9:00, the Dolphins call their Crack Toss concept. They tag what I am calling their “flip-jet” fake with it.
In week 9, they ran the same look, but flipped the ball to the upback Hill on a naked jet sweep.
The idea is for the misdirection of Hill working away from the side of the run call to bring the linebackers back a gap (or a few steps) for the offensive line to get up to them.
This tag is a nice wrinkle to give the defense different looks for Miami’s base runs.
The next two videos show nearly 24 minutes of Crack Toss.
