Bench - Inside Dig with the Packers
Bench - Inside Dig is a concept that generates big plays for many of the offensive trees in the NFL. Shanahan/McVay/LaFleur/Johnson have all featured it successfully in recent seasons.
A base version is shown below.
The Bench is the deep out cut from the X receiver in the diagram.
I bucket this full play call into the Inside Dig family.
When combined with a Bench family concept, the play is best read as a pure progression. Bench to the Inside Dig. A hi-low to the flat window, as well as a hi-low into the hole/hook window on the same side of the field.
One neat variation with a built in shot was called in week 7. Tagging the tight end to the side of the Inside Dig on a Chip Rail will take advantage of defenses wanting to bracket the Inside Dig with the cornerback and safety.
Ben Johnson is a master of the Inside Dig concept. I spend nearly 30 pages breaking down all the Chicago’s variations in The 2025 Chicago Bears Complete Offensive Manual. Click Here to check out all 500 pages.
The cutup below shows 8 clips of the Bench - Inside Dig concept from Matt LaFleur and the Packers.
